Frequently asked questions about Paintings.

About paintings

Gemma works primarily in bright, acrylic paint. She works fast, lots of movement and gesture goes into her expressive marks on the canvas. Gemma loves working with a Japanese range of acrylic gouache, the colours are faithful to nature offering a full spectrum of deep saturated pigment. Following the flow, often at a pace, most of her colour mixing happens on the canvas and is part of the intuitive process. There is a bold, fluidity from decades of drawing in sketchbooks that is akin to calligraphy. Deep and uplifting, there is always more than meets the eye.

All paintings are created on premium linen or cotton canvas, stretched on high quality wooden frames, depth approx 3 cm. Alongside acrylic, paintings may have ink, gold leaf, oil pastel and chalk. Every painting is sealed with several layers of mat acrylic varnish for preserving longevity and a stunning finish.

Artist Statement

When I paint I follow the golden thread of instinct.

Following the flow beyond the literal and linear frameworks, that so much of life is contained within.

Painting becomes an empowered choice to step into the imaginal realm.

This is where we can make contact with the deep self and enter the world of the symbolic and the mythic. The language of the soul.

There has been this ongoing parallel that the more I paint, the more I trust and enjoy life. The imaginal can easily be dismissed in favour of reason and logic, but the world has always been more complex than the surface approach can recognise.

Robert Bly ‘If we want to make art we have to stitch the inner and the outer world together’

How would you describe your artistic process?

The way I begin a painting, is to willingly enter a creative, dream-like trance. The first gesture contains the seed for the whole unfolding experience.

My internal world gets played out, and intermingled with deeper archetypal patterns.

It’s as if the personal material finds resolution in the expanded space of a universal home, the transcendent. Painting is a transformational process.

It reveals and connects to a space of cosmic wisdom.

I like all your paintings! How do I choose the right one for me?

Finding a good match is important and it’s very easy to do. In the first instance feeling a pull towards a painting while browsing on the screen is the first sign of connection. Sometimes it surprises us because we are not usually attracted to for example the colours in the painting might be different to our usual preference. However it’s important to trust your intuition.

It’s exciting to discover which painting is wanting to pair up with you. Either in person or on a video call we can go through a simple fun process to tune into what’s happening. Before you know it you’ll be enjoying your chosen painting and it will feel absolutely perfect.

Do you offer your paintings framed?

My paintings are listed unframed. Most of the canvas I work on has a deep, chunky edge that looks really good mounted without a frame. That said, it’s really down to personal preference and some of the pieces would look great framed. So if you’re interested in buying a painting with a frame we can chat about the best options.

Are your paintings signed?

Yes, on the front, right, lower corner you’ll find my initials GK and on the back of the canvas the painting is fully signed with the title. If you’d like to see pics of the edges and back of the canvas, I’m very happy to email you. We can also do a remote viewing so you can get a better feel for all the aspects of the painting. You’re also welcome to view the painting in person.

What kind of packaging and delivery service do you use?

Paintings are professionally wrapped in secure, protective wrapping. Fo delivery outside of the UK the canvas is packed into a wooden crate. All delivery is tracked and will be with you within a week of your payment.

I like your paintings but would like a smaller/larger version? Is this possible?

Two options here. One is I offer high quality giclee prints on canvas and textured etching paper. My paintings are scanned so they can be reproduced to twice the size or more of the original painting size.

Do you offer commissions?

The other option is to commission me to make a similar piece. Please note it won't be exactly the same… same colours, same feel but it will be it’s own. Please see my commission page for further details.

Do you offer prints?

Yes, I'm proud to offer high quality giclee prints of most of my original paintings.

Positive feedback from happy painting owners:

I recently moved your painting from my bedroom where I actually miss it, since i’d look at it every morning when I woke up.. But it’s so beautiful here a swell. When the sun comes in and before sunset.

There is something very unique about your painting. I can’t put it into words. A surreal vibrancy that just gets better and better. Thank you! Sean

I love my painting! I smile every day. I want more! Next house will have more wall space. I would love a matching pair next time. Maria
